Spring 1997 Second Edition -

ODV's #923 Methamphetamine Test receives approvals in California, Texas, Washington, Georgia, and many other states - its water based chemistry is SAFE and RELIABLE - and SENSITIVE - call us for details about the hottest test on the market -

Certification in all 50 States

ODV is pleased to be able to announce to all agencies across the United States that because of our use of standard generic chemistry, we are accepted as "State Certified" in all 50 states. In addition, ODV is fortunate to be able to offer this accepted chemistry in two configurations. In 1969, ODV was the first manufacturer of enclosed type tests with its Narcotest (tube) product line. This was later followed by the NarcoPouch (pouch) line being used widely around the United States and in several foreign countries today.

This certification has now been expanded to the point where our NarcoPouch is the most widely used test for training within the Federal Government (DEA, Border Patrol and U. S. Customs Service).

Correct Cocaine/Crack Field Testing Procedures:

By far the most popular field test being utilized today is the #904B Cocaine Reagent for both Cocaine HCl and Crack. In the past, officers have sometimes tried to take shortcuts in using this test, either in not watching the colorimetric reactions of each ampoule or relying solely on the reaction of the third and final ampoule of the Cocaine test. The following is a brief refresher of the correct testing methods and the correct interpretation of the field test.

For Cocaine HCl, always make sure the substance itself is well mixed so you are assured of testing some Cocaine HCl with whatever cut has been used. In the case of Crack, do not use the small residue amounts contained within a glassine or vial when you have actual rocks of Crack present. Always break off a small amount of the Crack from the rock and use this for testing. (The residue may be cut only and may give a negative reading).

Introduce the powder of Cocaine or the small rock particles into the bottom of the pouch using the methods discussed in making the field test more sensitive.

Break the first ampoule, agitate and watch for some BLUE presence within the test pouch. For Cocaine, depending on the strength and amount of substance used, you may have either a totally Blue solution or some Blue presence either in a thin line or particles along the bottom of the pouch. For Crack, you will see a pink solution with small Blue particles in the pouch.

IMPORTANT - You must see some Blue presence within the pouch on the first ampoule or your test is negative. If NO BLUE IS PRESENT...STOP TESTING.

If some Blue was present, break the second ampoule and agitate. The Blue solution or particles of Cocaine HCl and Blue particles of Crack will slowly clear to a Pink solution.

After breakage of the third ampoule and agitation, grasp the test pouch firmly by the side and tap it against a hard surface. This will move the glass fragments to one side. Then slowly roll the pouch back the opposite direction to a 45° angle. Your glass shards will remain to one side and the liquid will flow to the opposite side of the pouch for better viewing. You will now see a development of Pink over Blue solution required for a positive field test.

In following this procedure, you will notice we must have three (3) positive results in order to have a positive Cocaine/Crack test. You must have Blue presence in the first ampoule, Pink solution throughout in the second ampoule, and a layering of Pink over Blue in the third and final ampoule.

Any variation from these results are considered a NEGATIVE test. If you feel certain the substance is Cocaine/Crack and you do not obtain Blue presence in the first ampoule, you may do another test using slightly more substance. However, do not wish results into the bottom of the test pouch. Read the colors, and react only to what colors you see in the pouch.

Proper Procedures for Testing with the Narcotest Cocaine Reagent #7613

Over the years, officers have used both the #7604 Cobalt Thiocyanate test as well as the #7613 Cocaine Reagent for testing Cocaine HCl. With the introduction of Crack a number of years ago, it was discovered that the standard Cobalt Thiocyanate test would not easily identify Crack. Therefore, ODV made the recommendation that all testing for both Cocaine HCl and Crack should be conducted using the #7613 Cocaine Reagent.

This test utilizes a two ampoule system requiring a bright blue color reaction for both ampoules. The unique property of Cocaine HCl and Crack, when each of these substances are tested in the #7613 after breakage of the ampoule and agitation, causes a sticky residue (particles) to form on the inside of the tube itself. This residue will only appear when you have either Cocaine HCl or Crack.

In some instances, Base Caines like Procaine may, in fact, turn Blue/Blue in this two ampoule test. However, none of the Base Caines will ever present this same residue on the inside of the tube. From now on, be looking for this residue as part of your confirming process that the substance being tested is truly Cocaine HCl or Crack.

Ephedrine - Precursor to Meth

A common substance used to manufacture Methamphetamine, Ephedrine presents a problem due to the fact that it is relatively easy to convert it to Meth.

Ephedrine does not react with the common field test reagents. To identify Ephedrine, a popular precursor for Methamphetamine, use ODV #927 or #7627 Ephedrine Test. A brilliant blue color forms in the presence of Ephedrine.

NarcoPouch and Narcotest are on GSA contract

ODV is pleased to announce to all Federal Government sectors the continued offering of both the Pouch and Tube style tests on the Federal GSA Contract.

To make the purchasing simpler, we accept either Government purchase orders or Government credit cards. There is no surcharge for credit cards and all pricing is quoted freight paid within the United States. If you are a Federal Agency and require a copy of the GSA contract, please contact us at 1-800-852-0300.

Certified Training Seminars

ODV has been conducting certified training seminars for the past 27 years for both Narcotest and now the NarcoPouch product lines. These training sessions are conducted at the request of the host agency or in many cases, at the request of either State Police or DEA training sections.

The seminars are a three hour session which entail the following:

Each officer successfully completing the three hour course then receives a Certificate of Competency from ODV showing the ability to correctly use field tests. This certification includes possible Court testimony by our experts as to the individual officer's ability to correctly utilize the field tests.

If your agency is interested in hosting a training session, or you wish to participate in an upcoming session in your area, please feel free to contact us @ 1-800-852-0300.

Pouch Improvements

For years, officers have complained about using field tests in low light situations or learning the testing methods from other officers who may not have been certified in the correct use of the field tests. ODV has made three major improvements in the Pouches for your convenience.

1. Silk screened the back of all Pouches white so the colors will better be displayed both during daytime and nighttime use.

2. Numbered the front of each multiple ampoule Pouch either 1-2 or 1-2-3 to ensure that officers break the correct ampoules in order.

3. Above each number is a circle showing the required colorimetric reaction for that ampoule. A circle with a clear center indicates no color reaction is required. If a particular color is shown within the circle, you know what color to be looking for in a positive reaction.

Tip of the Month

When many officers start the field testing procedure, they simply open the suspect container (glassine, tube, etc.), extract a small amount of substance, introduce it into the field test, and proceed with the testing.

Without regard to the type of substance, all of these controlled substances have been exposed to various cutting agents. In the case of your powdered substances (Cocaine HCl, Methamphetamine, Heroin, etc.), get in the practice of working the container back and forth to ensure that if real substance is present, your sampling will have a much better chance of detecting it. In the case of Crack, again the substance may be found in glassine envelopes or small tubes. From the suspect carrying the rocks in their pocket this way, some of the cutting agent may have worn off. The small amount of residue or powder in the corners of the glassine or tube may be only cut, not actual Crack. Get in the habit of breaking the Crack rock into small pieces and introduce small amounts into the field test.

This tip should assist you in guaranteeing that if controlled substance is present in the suspect containers, you will find it.

Meth Testing:

We strongly recommend the use of the Marquis Reagent followed by the Meth Reagent (#923 Pouch or #7623 Tube) to eliminate any possible false positive readings.

If your jurisdiction would like to receive samples of the ODV Meth test for evaluation purposes, we encourage you to call 1-800-852-0300.

Safety Advisory:

Nitric Acid tests should only be used to differentiate between Heroin and Morphine. Use this test sparingly as it is the most aggressive of all the test reagents to human skin.
